2010 Yearbook

I finally finished our 2010 yearbook! I did one last year and am committed to trying to do one every year. It's a good exercise for me to go through and preserve our memories from the year past. It makes me stop and sit down and remember where we've been and what He's brought us through. It helps me to take the time to think through all that the past year has brought into our lives, the good things, the great things, and the hard things. Most of all it helps me to remember what He has done in our lives. 2010 was a big year. It started with the bang of Lee's cancer, and continued with the fear of Maddie's pneumonia. It took another twist when Rob's dad also got cancer, and his grandmother's cancer relapsed. We experienced the joy of making new friends and the even greater joy of seeing old friends come along side us in our times of need and become the deepest kind of friends you can have. We rejoiced as people came to know the truth. We celebrated with our family and friends as Weddings took place, Children were adopted, Babies were born. Some of those things we got to see in person and some we watched from afar. Looking back it is easy to see His hand in every circumstance, guiding, directing, encouraging, teaching. He is always so faithful. As we look at these photos and record these memories we know that we are blessed. Blessed in more ways then we can ever measure. Our hearts are filled with joy to be exactly where we are, having the privilege of living for Him. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 has been on my heart as I've been doing this book, "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." I want to preserve these memories for that purpose. So that each time we look at this book we remember the lessons He's taught us and all He has done for us in 2010. When the difficult days of 2011 come, I want to pull out this book and look back and remember that He's carried us through before and He will do it again. He never changes.

This study of John continues to totally captivate my attention. Most recently one of the things that came out of our study was identity. Jesus repeatedly identifies himself in John; I am: the bread of life, the light of the world, the living water, the way, the truth, the life.   So who am I? A wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, an auntie, a nurse, a teacher.........and on goes the list. But none of those are really me. Those are relationships that I have, or things that I do, but they aren’t me.   I spend a lot of time talking to young people and their parents who are trying to identify who they are. Not forgotten

It’s easy to feel forgotten, overlooked, or abandoned in our heart of hearts. Sometimes small things make us feel that way: not being invited to the party or not being acknowledged for a job well done. Sometimes it is much bigger things: extended illness, infertility, or loosing a job. Beyond this exist even heavier things that we shy away from thinking about: poverty, the loss of a loved one or violence. Whether big or small, intentional or unintentional, inflicted by fellow man or allowed by God, these disappointments leave behind varying levels of deep and painful wounds that are often difficult for anyone else to see.  Our tendency is to guard these wounds carefully and to protect ourselves in any way possible from the pain that they bring. Simultaneously most of us still wish to be noticed and to be known, but our fear of letting down that guard and letting anyone close enough to see our quiet pain or worse touch the pain holds us back. The Fount of Every Blessing

My birthday has rolled around again (that happens so quickly these days J ).   Sometimes, I’m surprised by my own age, I’ll wake up some mornings and think I’m still in my 20’s only to jolt myself back to reality that more time has passed then I think.   We use our birthdays and anniversaries to mark the passage of time.   They call us to stop and remember what has happened since the last time we passed this way. And whether the memories are good or bad there is something in us that needs to recall, evaluate, and acknowledge what has transpired.   As I pass my milestone this year I am captivated by the words of a very old hymn penned in 1757 by Robert Robinson, “Come Thou Fount”.   “Come thou fount of every blessing tune my heart to sing thy grace.”   Looking back over my year and even farther past that into the years before, I find that my life is covered with evidences of God’s grace.   They are weaved into every portion of my existence and...
