Sailing

Our little spot in the world is famous for a few things, beer being one, beaches another, and sailing 3rd. We were given the rare opportunity to genuinely experience the last one on the list this past Saturday. Rob and Alex have gotten to know a man named Jimmy in the past few months, who is a good friend, and a witty conversationalist. They have had many varied discussions on topics all over the grid, ranging from our very favorite book down to Jimmy’s very favorite hobby; sailing. Apparently Jimmy is quite the experienced sailor, having sailed in clipper ship races, from here, to Europe, down to Brazil. The boats he takes on these crazy races are quite large and manned by a crew of a few men. But he also docks a smaller private sailboat in the marina which is for fun shorter excursions. So Saturday he graciously agreed to host us, the Tandon’s, and our friends Hunter&Sarah on our first sailing expedition.

I have always wanted to go sailing. But meeting a friend with a true sailboat is rare so the opportunity has never presented itself. Saturday proved to be the perfect day; blue skies, a gentle wind, and just the right amount of sun. We could not have asked for a better day to glide over the water. It was beautiful!

Jimmy was a brave man to take out a crew of 6 novice sailors (or freshmen as he called us) all by himself. But he proved to be a good teacher, and had the three guys raising the sails and steering the boat in no time at all. I was content to find a spot to relax, hold on, and snap a few photos with the nifty photo gizmo we just got from the Fadners as a surprise present, and chat with Bethany and Sarah. The kids were safely stashed with Rob’s parents, laughing away their time with cousin Ella. So all in all it was an utterly perfect day to relax and enjoy the end of the summer. We sailed all along the city coastline and got the best view I have ever had of the beautiful city we live in. The air was amazingly clear so the mountains and islands were poking themselves out begging to be admired. There are some hard things about living on the other side of the world, but there are some really great perks sometimes too. Saturday was definitely one of those perky kind of days!
